How to Generate a PCAP File Using Wireshark

Wireshark is a network protocol analyzer that captures and examines network traffic in real-time. It enables identification and diagnosis of connectivity issues by analyzing data packets, including their source, destination, protocol, and content. This tool is particularly useful for troubleshooting server connection problems.

Download and Install Wireshark

  1. Navigate to the Wireshark download page
  2. Click "Download" in the top navigation bar
  3. Locate the "Stable Releases" section and select the Windows x64 Installer for your system
  4. Run the downloaded .exe file
  5. Click "Yes" when prompted to allow Wireshark to make changes to your device
  6. Follow the installation wizard:
    • Click "Next"
    • Review and accept the terms of service by selecting "Noted"
    • Continue clicking "Next" until the "Install" button appears
    • Click "Install" and wait for completion
    • Click "Next" then "Finish"

Capturing Network Traffic

Starting the Capture

  1. Launch Wireshark
  2. Click "Yes" when prompted for administrator privileges
  3. In the filter textbox, enter: host [your server IPv4 address]
  4. Double-click your active network connection (typically WiFi if not using ethernet)

Recording Traffic

  1. A new capture window will open showing real-time network traffic
  2. Attempt the problematic task (e.g., connecting to your server via RDP)
  3. Allow approximately 5 seconds after the connection attempt
  4. Click the red "Stop" button in the top-left corner to end the capture

Saving the Capture

  1. Click "File" in the menu bar
  2. Select "Save As"
  3. Enter a filename for your capture
  4. Click "Save"

The saved .pcapng file contains the network traffic data and can be analyzed to identify connection issues. Failed protocols and connection problems are typically highlighted in red within the capture data.
